I’ve Got Lots of Ideas…And That Is the Trouble

I’ve got lots of ideas about novels I would like to write, and that is the trouble I am currently facing. Making decisions is not my strong suit—which is why I tell my wife I married her, so I wouldn’t have to make them anymore—but there are certain decisions a writer cannot avoid. Only the writer can decide what kind of story he or she wants to write. It is the writer who chooses the genre, the characters, the plot, the subplots…you get the idea. A few months ago, I had a post called Writing Myself Into a Corner that dealt with combining genres…well, I seem to have found myself in a room with too many corners. (If you haven’t read that particular post, feel free to take a moment and read it.) That is the problem with endless possibilities, you have to pick one.

I am currently trying to decide between three different genres. (Okay, so that isn’t all that many corners to choose from, but when you are desperate to start writing, more than one choice is too many.)

Each genre has its own unique allure, a certain something that just cries out for me to write a story. One story takes me into a world of gears and gaslight, while another begs me to walk in a world of myths, magic, and legends. The third story calls me into a post-apocalyptic future where hope and salvation are a near-forgotten memory.

The ideas are mine, so if I want to see any of them come to fruition, I have to make that decision. If you are wondering what I will choose, so am I. If, and when, I know what I am going to choose, I will let you all know. I promise.

Just thought I would jot this down.
